Abstract:
TOS2CA is a user-driven data-centric system that allows a scientist to 1) define a phenomenon (such as drought, heat wave, severe storm, volcanic eruption, etc) empirically using existing regularly-gridded data, then 1') identify all occurrences of the phenomenon and track the evolution of each occurrence, 2) populate the locus of each occurrence with user-specified Earth-system data, so that 3) the curated data can be analyzed jointly to identify correlations that exist when the phenomenon is occurring and not when it is not. A prototype of the system will be demonstrated. The first application is to identify what atmospheric environments produce the different kinds of convective storms ("kind" being characterized by organization, longevity, size and productivity including surface precipitation intensity)
