Compact Ultraviolet Spectropolarimetry with Metasurfaces Fabricated using Nano-lithography

Abstract

We present a metasurface-enabled compact UV spectropolarimeter covering the band 300-350 nm that utilizes sub-wavelength grating-like architectures to simultaneously separate incoming wavelengths and polarizations. The compact instrument architecture realizes potential for low-cost near-surface ozone measurements from either an airborne or spaceborne platform. The metasurface enables a spectropolarimeter architecture without any polarizers or moving parts. We present our metasurface design and fabrication procedure, as well as the overall instrument architecture and performance testing. In addition, we demonstrate ozone measurements in a laboratory setting using our instrument prototype.
